Independent research context for adults seeking clarity rather than hype. A wide field of effects One compound, many targets, unanswered clinical questions. Ibogaine is a naturally occurring psychoactive alkaloid derived from the root bark of the Tabernanthe iboga plant, native to west-central Africa. Its plant origin matters: a single molecule can interact with several neurotransmitter systems at once, rather than fitting neatly into one drug category. Traditional use of Tabernanthe iboga has a long history. Indigenous groups in Gabon and Cameroon have used iboga in spiritual and healing ceremonies for centuries. The first Western accounts of ibogaine’s anti-addictive properties emerged in the 1960s through Howard Lotsof’s self-experimentation, but early observation is not the same as established addiction treatment. Interest now centers on whether ibogaine can alter withdrawal symptoms, craving, reward learning, and brain circuitry in people with substance use disorder. A Stanford report on ibogaine and PTSD research illustrates why the compound draws attention across addiction and mental health disorders, while also underscoring the need for controlled work. Understanding ibogaine A psychedelic alkaloid with multi-receptor pharmacology. Ibogaine is often described as a psychedelic because of its profound psychoactive effects, including vivid internal imagery and psychological insights. It is also pharmacologically unusual: its mechanism of action involves serotonin, dopamine, glutamate, opioid receptors, acetylcholine, and noradrenaline pathways in the central nervous system. Its primary active metabolite, noribogaine, has a sign
